Vic Park is full of op shops, including a couple of larger 'chain' shops on Albany Hwy, across the road from the Park Centre. If you're after something unique, and perhaps a bit special, go straight to the corner of Albany Hwy and Hampshire St and check out these two pearlers. Both are staffed by dedicated volunteers.

State District Victoria Park... Ben Wyatt (Labor) is Victoria Park's member for the Legislative Assembly. He is the second youngest member in the current parliament and the third Aboriginal to be elected to the WA Parliament.

Federal Division Swan... Steve Irons (Liberal) is Swan's member for the House of Representatives. He was the only Liberal Candidate to oust a sitting Labor MP at the election last year - he defeated Kim Wilkie by a mere 256 votes.

Victoria Park A Brief History

1831 - 972 acres of land granted to John Butler

1843 - Original Causeway Bridge built across mud flats (which became Herrison Island)

1860s - Albany Road was rebuilt in the early 1860s by convicts

1862 - Causeway Bridge rebuilt following floods

1886 - A settlement was started at "2 Mile Spring" - opposite the present Broken Hill Hotel

1896 - State school built on Cargill Street

1898 - Population reached 1,197

1899 - Broken Hill Hotel (now listed by the National Trust) and Town Hall was built (now demolished)

1903 - Public library built

1905 - Tram service began

1906 - Police station built

1912 - Post office built

1913 - Bowling club built

1917 - Population reached 5,000

1920s - Albany Highway bitumenised

1947 - Following improvements over the years, the Causeway Bridge began to be rebuilt in its entirety
